What
Is Sustainable Forest Management (SFM)?
The British Columbia Forests Society endorses
the principle that SFM is fundamental to the practice of
forestry in BC. There are several definitions of the concept
of SFM, and the Society supports the use of the Montreal
Process of Criteria and Indicators for Conservation and
Sustainable Management in Temperate and Boreal Forests.
SFM is more than sustainable timber harvest
or management, and it is more than 'timber management burdened
with environmental regulations and protected areas.' The
Montreal Process outlines the key elements of conservation
and SFM as:
1. Biological diversity
2. Productive capacity of forest ecosystems
3. Forest ecosystem health and vitality
4. Soil and water resources
5. Forest contributions to global carbon cycles
6. Social and economic benefits
7. Legal, institutional and economic frameworks
